Tachograph: Why the Morris JE Doesn’t Require One
A tachograph is a device used in commercial vehicles to record driving times, speeds, and rest periods for drivers. Its primary purpose is to ensure road safety and regulatory compliance by monitoring hours of service, preventing driver fatigue, and helping authorities enforce legal limits on driving times. Tachographs are generally mandatory for larger vehicles above a certain weight threshold, regulating commercial transport and protecting both drivers and other road users.
The Morris JE, however, does not require a tachograph, thanks to its lightweight construction and innovative design. Built with a recycled carbon-fibre body and a full aluminium chassis, the Morris JE has a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) of just 2.5 tonnes (2,500 kg). Even when carrying its maximum payload of 1,000 kg—one of the highest in the eLCV segment—the total combined mass remains below the 3.5-tonne limit set by UK and European regulations for tachograph usage.
This design advantage means that Morris JE owners and drivers enjoy simpler legal compliance and fewer administrative burdens. There’s no need to install or monitor a tachograph, allowing businesses to focus on day-to-day operations rather than extra regulatory obligations. Drivers can operate the van freely within the legal limits for lighter commercial vehicles, providing flexibility, convenience, and reduced operational complexity.
In addition to its tachograph-free benefits, the Morris JE’s lightweight construction contributes to its high efficiency, extended electric range, and impressive payload capacity. By combining practical performance with regulatory ease, the JE proves that an electric commercial van can be both sustainable and user-friendly.
In short, the Morris JE’s design ensures compliance with regulations without the need for a tachograph, offering businesses a practical, zero-emission solution that simplifies operations while delivering class-leading performance and usability.
